SS7 Attack

What happens if your phone calls, SMS and other communication gets bugged? Your all personal data falls into the hands of hackers?

They can login to your bank accounts and can make you bankrupt within minutes. Is this possible?

Yes it is.

Hackers can get access to your information by using exploit centers on Global Systems that connects one mobile network to another mobile network across borders.

How do they do that and What is SS7 Attack?

Common Channel Interoffice Signaling 7 (CCIS7) in the UK or Signalling System No 7 (SS7), which is known as Common Channel Signalling System 7 (CCSS7) in the US or C, is a system that connects one mobile phone network to another across borders.

It helps to pass the information between the two networks of different countries such as call information, messages exchanged between two parties.

Hackers can access this info and thus refer to as SS7 Attack. They can also access your location after getting your SS7 access.

Whats being done at the network end?

When the networks get to know this loop hole in their inter connecting network they start monitoring their networks and looking for intrusions or abuse of the signalling system.

They also have employed different security services and hackersĀ  to monitor SS7 attacks and neutralize them as soon as possible. There are so many other trusted companies like PT Security that can be trusted in these kind of attacks.

Whats the risk at the user end?

Well if the hacker has your phone info and at the same time your credit card info then heĀ  can destroy you and for normal users he cannot do much. Government institutions are more vulnerable to the SS7 attacks and there is great risk of actual security breach.

What user can do at their end?

Well there is a very little or nothing that a user can do at its end. All the systems and networks are out of user control. The only thing that a user can do is to send the important messages and information through encrypted messaging services like Whatsapp Messages and Apple’s iMessages.

In actual there is no such measure by which we can do anything to keep ourselves away from this. Researches are going on to find a reliable solution to this big problem.
